Aloha,
Welcome to this website about our current film in production, "Kindy Sproat: A Gift to the Heart" – a film about legendary talk story musician and performer, Clyde Halema’uma’u “Kindy” Sproat.
This film actually started several years ago when I was interviewing Kindy at his house overlooking Pololu Valley for another film. As we talked, I began to hear the stories Kindy had been told by his grandmother – stories passed down through the generations via a long tradition of oral history. These stories, imbued with fundamental Hawaiian values, painted a picture of what life was like 150 years ago when Kindy’s ancestors were canoe carvers and cape makers for the ali'i, the Hawaii royalty.
I began to realize that what I was listening to was a window into the past recounted by one of the most gifted storytellers in all Hawai’i.
And today, people discuss sustainability as if it they came up with a new idea. Well, Kindy grew up in Honokane ‘Iki, the remote third valley of Pololu in North Kohala -- with no running water and no electricity – with only the ingenuity and the deep understanding they had which enabled them to respectfully use and maintain their resources. These were the days when Kohala was truly sustainable.
Kindy traveled the world like Johnny Appleseed, spreading aloha wherever he went, sharing his songs and stories – an "Ambassador of Aloha."
Growing up during the plantation era, Kindy's friends and neighbors were from a rainbow of ethnic groups that taught him we are all part of one ‘ohana.
As we now move into uncertain times, this film will remind us of days gone by and how people of diverse backgrounds worked and thrived together with aloha in a place called Kohala.
Needless to say, this treasure trove of cultural stories and songs by one of the legends of Hawai’i compelled us to preserve the traditions and values and, indeed the man, it honors.
